Responsibilities for providing insurance

Volunteers working in an incorporated community group
Incorporated groups are responsible for providing their own insurance because they are independent entities. Volunteer groups need to be incorporated if:

  • they are working on private property
  • they apply for certain funding
  • they want to employ staff, consultant or contractor

Volunteers working in a not-for-profit organisation
Local councils, state agencies and non-government environmental organisations are responsible for providing insurance for volunteers working under their direction.

As land managers, local councils and state agencies may apply for and administer grants and pay contract staff on behalf of a volunteer group.
