Case study: councils managing volunteers working on public land in urban areas

Volunteers involved with environmental programs do a wide range of activities and work on land which is

  • Under the care and control of government organisations
  • In private ownership (Landcare)

Volunteers need to be adequately covered by insurance provided by the community group or organisation they work in as this work can inadvertently cause personal injury to the volunteers, other people or to property.

There is a National Landcare Insurance Program available from April 2005 for community based volunteer landcare, coastcare and other environmental groups. Contact Landcare Australia Limited for details www.landcareonline.com.
