In-kind monetary value of volunteering

The Australian Government has set standard values for volunteer work in environmental programs at
$20 per hour (@ 2004). www.nht.gov.au/envirofund

Example: A group of 6 volunteers work for 3 hours once a month @ $20.00/hour
= 6 people x 3 hours x 12 months x $20
= $4320 equivalent value work for the year

Tips

  • This hourly rate is used to estimate the monetary value of volunteer work as a matching in-kind contribution to monetary funding.
  • If you are justifying a new or continuing volunteer program and writing funding applications, the above information about benefits and monetary values, matched with some realistic statistics and locally specific examples, can be very useful.
