Establishing new work sites

Thought

Do we seek volunteers to establish new work sites or wait for them to come to us?
Often the interest of one or two residents/ landholders can be enough to start establishing a group of volunteers - these few people can help spread the word (of the cause) and talk to their neighbours and community networks. See Promotion

Steps for establishing a new work site

1. Make contact with the community living nearby

2. Do a site assessment

  • Assess what is currently there - this will help in knowing where to start and measure success later on
  • Involve the volunteers
  • Take photos and draw site maps
  • Check the land ownership and zoning, flora and fauna species, any plans for future development, the presence of threatened species or ecological populations and heritage sites or features

3. As soon as it is practical, develop a site rehabilitation strategy/ work plan/ site management plan with the volunteers

  • Link the site plan with relevant regional, catchment and local plans

Tip

Communicate the site plan to all volunteers including any new people who join in later.
