A useful resource kit for volunteer projects

Lake Macquarie Landcare Resource Office, NSW

Over 170 Landcare groups work on public land in Lake Macquarie and are guided by the support staff at the Landcare Resource Office. Lake Macquarie Inc. is the network community organisation that secures funding, supports community needs and keeps the whole Landcare structure going through regular Landcare network gatherings at local and regional levels.

Many Landcare groups employ a range of strategies to restore or maintain their site's natural features. The experience and expertise of some of Lake Macquarie's Landcare members have been collated and compiled into a Folder Of Onsite Landcare Skills (FOOLS), as a resource kit for all Landcare groups in Lake Macquarie. FOOLS contains information for volunteer groups on how to gather support for projects, manage a project, fulfil occupational health and safety obligations, monitor and evaluate projects and more.

The FOOLS resource is an ever expanding document and as it grows it will eventually be a one stop shop for every aspect of Landcaring from how to put a plant in the ground to how to keep a group expanding. Some examples of the information and forms in the kit include:

  • Health & Safety and Environmental Risk Checklist
  • Safe Work Method Statements for Tree Planting and Weeding
  • Group Skills Summary Sheet
  • A Daily Diary that records the work done and any safety issues
  • Landcare (Volunteer) Team Leader Training Module
  • Process for Starting a new Landcare group
  • Annual Monitoring and Evaluation Form (on ground work and volunteer participation)

Permission is granted to modify any of the documents or templates, however acknowledgment of the Lake Macquarie Landcare Resource Officer and Lake Macquarie City Council is requested.

FOOLS is available in hard copy & CD formats for $55 plus postage (@2004) from the Lake Macquarie Landcare Resource Office, Phone 02 4959 5080 Email lro@kooee.com.au
