Deciding when to recruit

There are different times and ways to recruit long-term volunteers for environmental programs.

  • On an ongoing basis, as potential volunteers approach the organisation.
  • In a group at set times during the year.
  • Through referral services, such as the peak volunteering organisation in your state or regional volunteer referral centres. There are several volunteer referral services available through the Internet. People searching for volunteering opportunities can be matched with not for profit organisations registered with the services.

To find your state's volunteering organisation or the nearest volunteer resource centre go to the links page at Volunteering Australia www.volunteeringaustralia.org

Tips

  • If volunteers are recruited on a continual basis, be prepared to provide orientation, induction and training all year around.
  • If volunteers are recruited as a group, allocate enough resources (paid staff and time) for an intensive period of recruitment.
