Volunteer agreements

A volunteer agreement provides a code of conduct which clearly informs a volunteer about what is expected of them and what they can expect from the organisation. Volunteer agreements are not legally binding but can establish a commitment by volunteers and the organisation to the volunteering relationship.

There are positives and negatives about volunteer agreements. For example a potential volunteer might be terrific but unwilling to sign an agreement. Some people may already be committed to the cause and their volunteering role and so having to sign an agreement could put them off. On the other hand, volunteer agreements can be an awareness raising tool to clarify the expectations and demonstrate that the organisation places a high importance on volunteering.

Thought

  • What level of performance do you expect from the volunteers?
  • What level of performance can the volunteers expect from you and your organisation?
  • What is your reason for having a volunteer agreement?
  • Can you get commitment from volunteers and clarify what is expected of them without using a volunteer agreement

Potential volunteers should know about the volunteer agreement at the time of their inquiries and induction so they know that a code of conduct applies. The agreement is normally signed after the induction interview when the volunteer is matched with a volunteer job.
