RSVP to join us for a walk and talks on Tamborine Mountain inland from the Gold Coast.

Tamborine Mountain is a remnant volcanic plateau, formed on basalt lava flows from the Wollumbin (Tweed volcano).

This event demonstrates the ecological restoration of paddocks to developing rainforest to regain habitats. It explains the restoration approaches and collaborative involvement by organisation and many people. This is a long-term project with on-going management by Scenic Rim Council. Wanggerriburras are the Indigenous Clan of Tamborine Mountain.

From the front of the site, we shall walk down to the picnic area and listen to three guest speakers:

  • Judith Roland Tamborine Mountain Landcare President
  • Richard Bull from the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network, and
  • a Scenic Rim Regional Council representative.

At the picnic area, there’ll be displays such as the mapping of butterfly corridors, long-term data and monitoring from restoration works over the past 4 years, and progress reports.

We shall also show how to plant the Birdwing Butterfly Vine Aristolochia praevenosa, a significant food source for the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Ornithoptera richmondia, and preferred planting techniques.

Victoria Bakker, ecologist and bush regenerator, will lead the group around the site and show various stages of revegetation and progress. Victoria will describe methods and techniques for the control of exotic woody weeds including Lantana and Easter Cassia, the treatment of exotic vines White Glycine and White Passionfruit and exotic grasses including Broadleaf Paspalum. She’ll also explain how they worked around existing structure, habitat trees, preparing the site for planting and minimal herbicide techniques for revegetation and maintenance.

It is a fine opportunity for learning how to expand habitat, utilising natural regeneration, and maximizing regeneration potential. During the site walk, we shall be actively looking for spring-emergent Richmond Birdwing Butterflies!
